I am a strong, intelligent, confident person and I have been the woman in this story. Unfortunately it’s far more complicated than simply ‘speaking up or standing up for oneself’ as quite a few people have commented. Power imbalances in relationships develop, often very subtly, over time. And, to be honest, one simply gets worn down and it becomes a defence mechanism to keep quiet and placate.
